On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence, announcing the colonies’ separation from Great Britain, while the Constitution provides the legal and governmental framework for the United States. The Declaration, with its eloquent assertion “all Men are created equal,” is beloved by the American people. The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States, and the Bill of Rights, known collectively as the Charters of Freedom are on display in the National Archives Rotunda in Washington, D.C.
The American Revolution (aka, American Revolutionary War, United States War of Independence, War of Independence) was an insurrection carried out by 13 of Great Britain’s North American colonies that began in 1775 and ended with a peace treaty in 1783. The colonies won political independence and went on to form the United States of America.
In support of Independence Day and the American Revolution, the Learning Resources Center created a physical books display in the LRC featuring the books highlighted below.
