Cultural Observances and Awareness Events: Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month 2024

Special Observances 2024: Home

Theme: Advancing Leaders Through Innovation

During Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AANHPIHM), the Department of Defense pays tribute to the remarkable contributions of individuals like Florence Finch, Bruce Lee, Ellison Onizuka, and Kurt Chew-Een Lee, whose stories embody
the resilience, courage, and diversity of these vibrant communities.

AANHPIHM dates back to the 95th Congress (1977-1978) when five joint resolutions were introduced proposing that a week in May be designated to commemorate accomplishments of Asian/Pacific Americans.  Many years later in 1992, Congress passed Pub. L. No. 102-450, which permanently designated May of each year as “Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month.”  Pursuant to Pub. L. No. 102-450, Presidents Clinton, George W. Bush, Obama, Trump and Biden have issued annual proclamations designating May as “Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month.”

This year's theme is "Advancing Leaders Through Innovation."
